• Are able to stand on their own feet as a couple and are not dependent either financially or emotionally on either set of parents

• Respect one another’s needs for privacy and space

• Parent together

• Deal with crisis and adversity together

• Fight fairly

• Accept differences without trying to change your spouse

• Keep romance alive.
